It is doubtful if the red eye flight is the favourite of any business person who uses them, but it cannot be argued that they are now an integral part of the daily business commute of many air travelers both here in South Africa and abroad. However, as necessary as they have become to make early morning meetings and hit tight deadlines, they can add a tremendous amount of stress to the person undertaking them; which is why we at Travel Manor have used our many years of travel expertise to help you not only survive the red-eye, but in fact thrive and power on through those early morning meetings. Here’s how:
While trading one’s bed for an uncomfortable plane seat is not always a choice, it is often a necessity, and one that you can always prepare for! In fact we highly recommend that you ensure that your body is ready for the flight by ensuring that you eat light meals and stay hydrated. Also stay away from coffee or food and drink items that might interrupt your sleep patterns. If possible also try to avoid being overstimulated and kept awake by the commute to the airport. Do this by asking a friend to drive you to the airport or simply take a cab or airport shuttle.
Even if you are an aisle-loving air traveler, when flying the red-eye let us book you a window seat! This will help to ensure that you’re not woken up by the typical hustle and bustle up and down the aisles or by seat-mates needing a mid-flight bathroom break. Alternatively let us quote you on Premium Economy, Comfort class or Business class (if it is available on the flights) or even at an emergency exit (which generally allows for more leg room, at an extra fee. Most airlines nowadays allows travellers to pay a bit extra for a more a comfortable seat in designated areas.
You can order water on the plane (in fact we advise that you to do so), but we recommend that you stay away from plane food on an overnight flight as they are notorious for being packed with preservatives and sugars, both of which will negatively affect you body at night. If you can take along some almonds, because not only are they easy to transport but they will not spike your blood sugar. Also remember to include a few comfort and hygiene goodies in your bag to help you freshen up. These should include at least lip balm, deodorant, a toothbrush, and a neck pillow. If possible also invest in some noise cancelling headphones as this will allow you to take a break from the noise of traveling in an airplane.
Use the time on the plane to rest and gather your thoughts. Do not prep for the meeting on the plane, instead do this before leaving and during the course of a normal workday if possible. This will help ensure that you arrive as rested and ready for the morning meeting as possible, and allow you to power thought is as well as the rest of the day.
